Fun Tissue Paper Hat Kids Can Make

Making a colorful hat from newspaper and tissue paper is a really fun craft for kids. Hats can be made into all kinds of shapes and sizes. It's amazing how different the hats can turn out also.

Items needed:

  • Newspaper or craft paper
  • Tacky white glue
  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape

  1. If using newspaper, start with a double thickness of entire sheets of newspaper.  If using craft paper, one thickness should be sufficient.
  2. Fold paper in half, and experiment folding edges over at various angles, to get the look you want.  continue to fold over stray edges to make a smooth silhouette.  Tape all edges, inside and out, with masking tape.
  3. You can make short, small hats ... tall, skinny hats wide, floppy hats, etc.  It's all in the folding.  Just experiement for a bit before deciding on your final folds.
  4. Cut strips and squares from tissue paper.  Several sheets can be cut at one time.  Let kids choose the colors they wish to use.  Some may choose only blues, some may want every color available.  That's okay and their hats will all look different.
  5. Make little balls, wadded up, from some of the pieces of tissue paper.  cut little fringed sections, wadding up the top, for adding to edges, etc.  Other pieces can be used as flat strips or squares.
  6. Start applying dabs of glue to areas and press selected pieces in place.  Using a thick tacky glue lets kids turn over their hats while working on them without the already attached pieces falling off.  Obviously, they will need to take some care.
  7. Let the hats dry thoroughly and then have a Spring parade!
