Best Kids Websites with Online Interactive Stories to Help Kids Learn to Read

Here at ZiggityZoom we have some favorite websites that feature kids online books and stories to read.  Obviously some of our favorites are featured here on ZiggityZoom.  These stories are perfect for kids that are just learning to read and even if you have younger children it's a good time to get them interested in reading.

It's always quite a marvel to watch kids when they realize that the words actually say something about the pictures in the story they are looking through. This is when it first dawns on kids that they can also learn to read books.

Some of our favorite Kids websites with interactive stories are listed here.

Family Resolutions to Live By

This year I’m resolving not to tell you anything you don’t already know. At risk of sounding like a broken record, I’m going to recommend doing these three things in 2010:

1.    Eat better
2.    Get more exercise
3.    Spend more time together as a family

My guess is that, if I left it at that, we’ll be sitting here next January talking about the same things. Resolutions are often dependent on a turning-over–a-new-leaf mentality that passes when the calendar flips to February and they don’t fit into the reality of our lives (it’s hard to go to the gym every day after work when you have to pick the kids up from daycare and get home to make dinner). We also try to make these changes independently, relying only on ourselves to count calories, get out for a run or schedule a family date-night.

So what if, this year, you make family resolutions instead of personal ones? By picking resolutions that have a direct impact not only on your personal health and well-being, but also on your entire family, you’ll feel more responsible for following through all year and you’ll have the added element of familial peer pressure to keep yourself—and each other—motivated.

Here are three resolutions that could go a long way toward improving your health and happiness, and some practical ideas for making them happen. I’ve broken them down into basic goals you can achieve with small changes to your lives and stretch goals you and your family can shoot for if you’re feeling competitive. Add your own ideas—and it’s totally fine (recommended, even) to change the approaches throughout the year.

Teaching your Child Selflessness

Recently, I asked my just-turned-five-year-old son to gather items to donate to hurricane and fire victims. I closed my eyes and prepared for howls of “What do you mean you’re giving away my toys?!” It never came. As I opened my eyes, I saw him enthusiastically hauling toys from his toybox and beyond. He relinquished his old baby rattles, Legos, and his prized super hero collection. I asked if he really wanted to take all these items. “Yes, mom,” he replied. As we loaded up our car, I praised him for wanting to give his toys to those in need. That’s when it hit…

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU’RE GIVING AWAY MY TOYS?!” he yelled.

“Honey, I said we were going to donate today.”

“Donate? I thought we were getting a donut.”

Our Favorite Best Websites for Preschool Kids

The websites we have chosen for preschool kids that are our very favorite and, especially, ones our little kids like to play on and go back to are listed here.  We like kids websites that are easy to navigate and that have simple activities for preschool children.  Kids like easy online games, simple online coloring and things that surprise them.  One of the most amazing sites, even for big kids is Poisson Rouge.  Just putting your mouse over anything on a page makes magical things happen.  If you haven't check out this particular kids website, you really should.  Kids love it.

FurReal Friends Zambi the Baby Elephant Helps Raise Money for Charity

Project Zambi is a charity that is dedicated to raising awareness about the estimated 15 million children who have lost parents and relatives to the AIDS epidemic in Africa and around the world. Hasboro has established the Project Zambi Fund within the Hasbory Children’s Fund that will support programs that benefit children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Hasboro has committed to donate 50% of the net profit (a minimum of $500,000) from the sale of the Furreal Friends Zambi the Baby Elephant. It’s a special edition which is truly special because the design on it’s ears is a special pattern created by children from one of the African communities dedicated to caring for AIDS orphans. Zambi curls her trunk around your finger and blows kisses and trumpets when you pet her back. She also moves her mouth and wiggles her ears. Zambi is recommended for children age four and up. Teach Your Child The Gift Of Giving This Holiday Season With Charitable Organizations to Sustain Life

This holiday season, consider letting your child help a family in need through one of the organizations that help children and families all around the world.  Organizations such as ChildFund, Heifer International and World Vision are all set up so you can choose what you would like to gift to a family and how much you will spend.  Options include giving livestock, to provide nourishment and income, educational materials, medical equipment, better homes and more.  Children can help choose chickens, goats or whatever you feel you can afford.  There are gifts for as little as $8 that will give a family 10 chicks that will be a godsend to them.

Teaching Kids to Care for Pets - Whether It Is A Cat Dog Fish or Bird

Most kids love animals and would like to have a pet.  In fact, kids often beg for pets when they see them ... "Can I have a puppy ... please?"  But parents need to think long and hard before introducing a pet into a household.  And of utmost importance is the type of pet your family will be the happiest with and that the pet will be the happiest with and well-cared for.

While some families can deal with a new puppy, others cannot plus puppies are a lot of work ... sort of like having a new baby.  And that is not a joke.  So, even though Susie is begging for a dog or cat, do a little reasearch first ... maybe a bird or fish will fill the pet need, but even little pets need daily care.

Regardless of what pet your family decides on,  you, as parent, should be making this decision by the way, make sure your child will be involved in the care of the pet if they are the one asking for the pet.  Get some books beforehand rather than rushing out to get some little unsuspecting animal.  Read up, with your child, on how much care will be involved, what type of food the animal eats and any other important information.  There are many book that can be borrowed from the library and this is another fun outing that can be part of the Pet planning process.

Explain to your child that they are expected to help care for the pet and really talk about what exactly they will have to do every day.  Whether it is a cat or a bird, explain that not only does the animal need food and water daily, but they must be given attention.  Obviously, depending on the pet, different pets will require different types of attention.  Cats need petting, dogs need exercising, birds like to be talked to.

A Melodious Way to Get Gleeful Tunes from Tiny Mouths

Forty plus years ago a popular song contained these lyrics: “Sing, sing a song. Make it simple, to last a whole life long.” For the preschool teacher or parent who wants to introduce one or more children to a new song, that phrase makes clear the best way to answer that challenge. It also underscores the fact that even a simple song can leave a lasting impression in a still-developing mind.

Whenever a preschool child learns something new, that child experiences a feeling of happiness. When children are happy, they feel positive about themselves. They understand that their newly acquired knowledge allows them to better contribute to society. Hence, the teaching of every new skill holds great importance in either a preschool or a home setting.

Each new song learned by a small child should be viewed as a new skill. If you work as an instructor in a preschool setting, you will want to teach a variety of songs. How should you tackle this task? Be sure to first practice the song at home with a friend or a family member. Concentrate on learning both the rhythm and the melody. Practice until you feel confident that you can reproduce the song without faltering or quavering.

You may want to get hold of a CD or a tape that contains some of the preschool songs that you would like to teach your class. This is an excellent way for a preschool instructor to learn a new song. By listening to a song over and over, you can learn any simple song much faster.

5 Tips for Packing Your Kids Lunch

School is back in session for many kids so let’s talk school lunches. Sodas, juice drinks, cookies, hotdogs, and chips- all common school lunch components but none healthy. Over the past years, some schools have improved the nutritional quality of their lunches but it is an area that desperately needs more attention by both schools and parents.

What’s scary is that the obesity rate of young kids to teens is significantly rising and poor lunch options aren’t making things any better. Over 1/3 of our nation’s youth are either overweight or obese. Poor food choices and a lack of physical activity are contributors to this epidemic. So, what can you do as a parent do to help prevent your child from weight control issues?

For starters, making sure that they have a healthy and adequate lunch will put them on the right track. Kids can be awfully picky when it comes to choosing and eating certain foods. In general, there is an overconsumption of high calorie drinks and high fat foods and an underconsumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If you are unsure about what your kids may be eating at school, get the school menu and consider visiting at lunchtime. You can also volunteer to serve the children to get a better understanding to see what they are actually eating.

If your kids are taking lunches from home try to limit the highly processed snacks and give them more fresh food items like fruits and vegetables. If you have healthier foods available at home to make a healthy lunch, you can send your kids to school with the reassurance that they’re getting a nutritious meal.

Follow these 5 tips for packing your kids school lunch:

1. Plan Ahead: Since you can only pack a good lunch if you have the foods available make sure to go shopping at least 1-2 times per week so you will have fresh foods on hand.

Teaching Your Kids to Take Healthy Risks

“Be Careful! Don’t go too close, or you will get hurt!” As parents we know that there are many potential dangers in the world. And while we would like to protect our children from each and every hazard, we know that we can’t. Furthermore, we know that even if we could protect our children from all peril, this wouldn’t be good for them.
