Spring 2009 Picture Book Picks
Picture books remain a favorite with us, even as grownups. So, we are happy to announce some of our new favorites for 2009. We choose books for many reasons. Sometimes it's the art and at other times it's the simplicity of the story, but, for one reason or another, it speaks to us and the kids in the age group for which it was intended.
by Gail Page (Bloomsbury, Ages 4-8) This endearing book is about Bobo the dog, who tries very hard to be a good dog. It's just that he does have some problems controlling himself in certain situations. Kids will laugh at Bobo's antics as he tries to redeem himself. A fun book.
by Sara Varon (Scholastic, Ages 4-8) This is the second adventure for Chicken and Cat. Chicken starts up a housekeeping business and hires Cat to help but Cat is pretty clumsy at the cleaning part. He contributes though when he catches a mouse thief and the friends turn the business into Chicken and Cat's Housekeeping & Mousekeeping Services. Wonderful art with a theme of friendship and the importance of individual talents.
by Amy Krouse Rosenthal (Chronicle Books, Ages 4-8) Little Pea is a happy pea. He like to do lots of fun things but the one thing he doesn't like to do is eat his Candy, which is his main course for dinner every night. He struggles through dinner just so he can have his Spinach! A topsy-turvy tale for picky eaters.
by Peter Brown (Little Brown Young Readers, Ages 4-8) this enchanting garden story has a subtle environmental theme. A little boy, Liam, discovers a struggling garden and starts taking care of it. The garden eventually spreads throughout the dark, gray city turning it into a lush, green world. An extra fun element is the seek-and-find aspect of trying to find Liam on every page.
